Ingredients
- 1/4 cup yellow lentils (moong dal)
- 1/4 cup red lentils (masoor dal)
- 2 cups water
- 1 small tomato, chopped
- 1/2 small onion, chopped
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- 1/2 inch ginger, grated
- 1 green chili, chopped (optional)
- 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds
- 1/2 teaspoon mustard seeds
- 1/2 teaspoon red chili powder
- 1 tablespoon ghee (or oil)
- Salt to taste
- Fresh cilantro, chopped (for garnish)
- Juice of half a lemon
Cooking Instructions
- Rinse the yellow and red lentils under running water until the water runs clear.
- In a medium saucepan, combine the lentils and 2 cups of water. Bring to a boil over medium heat.
- Add the chopped tomato, onion, garlic, ginger, green chili, turmeric powder, and salt. Stir well.
- Reduce the heat to low and simmer for 20-25 minutes, or until the lentils are tender and the mixture has thickened. Stir occasionally.
- In a small pan, heat the ghee (or oil) over medium heat. Add the cumin seeds and mustard seeds. Cook until they start to crackle.
- Pour the tempering mixture into the cooked dal. Stir well to combine.
- Simmer the dal for another 5 minutes to let all the flavors meld together.
- Remove from heat and add the red chili powder, lemon juice, and chopped cilantro. Give it a good stir.
- Serve hot, preferably with naan, roti, or rice. Enjoy your solo dal extravaganza!
