- Cooking Method: Rolling
- Prep Time: 30 minutes
- Cuisine Type: Japanese
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup sushi rice
- 1/2 cup water
- 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
- 1/2 tablespoon sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 nori sheet
- 1/4 avocado, thinly sliced
- 2 slices of cucumber, julienned
- 2 ounces sushi-grade raw fish (tuna or salmon)
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce
- Wasabi and pickled ginger (to taste)
Cooking Instructions
- Rinse 1/2 cup sushi rice until the water runs clear. Cook with 1/2 cup water in a rice cooker.
- In a small bowl, mix 1 tablespoon rice vinegar, 1/2 tablespoon sugar, and 1/4 teaspoon salt until dissolved.
- Transfer the cooked rice to a wooden/fat edge cutting board or a bowl. Gently fold in the vinegar mixture.
- Place a nori sheet, shiny side down, on a bamboo mat.
- Wet your hands to prevent sticking, then evenly spread the seasoned rice onto the nori, leaving a 1-inch strip at the top.
- Layer the avocado slices, cucumber, and sushi-grade fish horizontally across the middle of the rice.
- Lift the bamboo mat edge closest to you and start rolling the sushi tightly, using the mat to press and shape the roll.
- Seal the roll by moistening the 1-inch nori strip with a bit of water and pressing it down.
- Slice the roll into bite-sized pieces with a sharp knife. Serve with soy sauce, wasabi, and pickled ginger.
Suggestions
- Swap avocado for mango for a tropical twist.
- Replace raw fish with cooked shrimp or crab sticks if raw isn’t your thing.
- Garnish with sesame seeds or drizzles of spicy mayo for extra flair.
- Use a damp towel to wipe your knife between cuts to keep slices clean and even.
